We are very proud to announce that two of our golf athletes have brought the Alec Calvert Trophy home. It has been a long time since our athletes won the cup. The last time we had it was in 2008.

The event was hosted by 13th Beach Golf Club in Torquay, which was attended by a number of academies from all across Victoria. The event started on Saturday with a full-day Training Day for the Golf Program from all the Victorian Regional Academies of Sport.

The day was started with a presentation by Matt Cutler, speaking about the Victorian High Performance Pathway and opportunities that exist for the Junior golfers who come from Regional Academies. Matt also taught the athletes about the coaching philosophies of the Victorian High Performance team and what they should expect if they progress beyond their Academy.

The Athletes then went through practical sessions which were conducted by Academy coaches Gary Middleton (BSA), Scott Smith (BSA), Craig Bonney (SWAS) & Kris Mueck (BAS). The Athletes needed to complete some drills, practice routines and Strength and Conditioning session. And to wrap up the practical session, athletes completed some fun group challenges like Long Game, Pitching, Chipping and Putting.

During the lunch break, the athletes were provided with an educational presentation by GA Media Manager Mark Hayes regarding social media, interviewing techniques, good and bad media and social media performers. The session then finished with a mock interview with two Barwon squad members Mitch Crabbe & Lockie Bath.

To conclude the day, athletes went through a recovery session led by Ben King.

The event peaked on Sunday, when the athletes competed for the Alec Calvert Trophy. The athletes tried to put into practice what they had learned over the training day on the previous day. Our academy representatives, Darcy and James have done us proud by winning the trophy by .1 of a shot from South West Academy.
