Sam Lyons, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 The North American Junior Olympics are held every year at a different venue and attended by a large number of clubs as well as international competitors. The competition provides athletes with the ability to compete in all disciplines ranging from Slalom, freestyle through to down River and Boatercross. Points and medals are awarded to all classes across the board, and at the end of the events, the winning club is awarded the overall title. The Bendigo Bank Academy of Sport sent 4 athletes on the 2010 USA Development trip to the North American Junior Olympics. The athletes; Eliza Singleton, Annie Tolmay, Krystal Davis and Grace O’Donoghue Hayes, were exposed to a high level of international competition allowing them to develop whitewater skills, as well as racing skills. To that end, the trip took in 4 days at the National Whitewater Center at Charlotte, North Carolina ( grade 3-4), and then moved to the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Nantahala, North Carolina for training and Competiton at the North American Junior Olympics. As well as training and exposure to a variety of rivers and whitewater the athletes competed in a variety of classes in Slalom, Downriver and Freestyle. The Junior Olympic Festival was held from July 10 through July 18.
